Chapter Sixteen

Now

I took the painted image of Sean from Raina and held it in front of me at arm’s length. Though I knew it was just the demon taking another dig at me—albeit a creative one—I couldn’t help but feel at unease. Such detail…she’d gotten every shadow, every curve, every slight blemish just right. Even if I had wanted to deny that it was him, I couldn’t. A photograph couldn’t have been more accurate.

I dropped the painting and gripped Raina by the collar of her nightgown. “I am addressing the entity inside of Raina Hemlock!”

“What are you doing?” Jade put a hand on my shoulder and tried to pull me away.

I pushed her back and tightened my grip on Raina. “In the name of God the Father, I command you to show yourself to me! Manifest, you son of a bitch!”

Raina let out a cry and desperately tried to pull away. “Stop it! Let me go!”

“I demand a response!” I moved one hand to grip her by the head so she couldn’t pull further away. “Why this girl? She’s nothing special. Unexceptional.”

“Felix!” Jade again pulled on me but I didn’t let go of Raina. I almost had it! I could feel it!

“If you wanted an artist, you could’ve had any of your choosing. Why this pathetic nobody’s child in this backwater state? What do you gain by using her to taunt me?”

The lights flickered and the foundations of the house trembled. Jade let me go and took a step back, giving the ceiling a worried look. “Felix, stop! You’ll bring the whole house down before you conjure that thing!”

“Let the house crumble then,” I said, squeezing Raina’s shoulders tight. “It’s only a house, and Raina is only one girl. Look at you, demon, trying to prove how powerful you are! But you’ve done nothing I haven’t seen before. You demons, all the same.”

A power exploded out of Raina, throwing me back and knocking over several canvas paintings. The terrible, choking power flew through the room, rattling everything that wasn’t nailed down. Raina lifted onto her tiptoes and then an inch off the floor. “Non sumus īdem ,” the demon within spat. We are not the same .

I lowered my arm from my face. “There you are. Name yourself, demon. Who are you, then?”

Raina’s mouth smirked, but it wasn’t her smiling at us. “Sean wanted me to say hello. It’s too bad you slipped away from us. You two could be in cells next to each other. You could listen to him curse your name as we rip the flesh from his body and feast upon it!”

Jade was suddenly beside me, gripping my arm hard enough to leave bruises. “The girl,” she whispered, staring at Raina. “The poor child!”

Raina’s head tipped back. The wind ceased and she fell into a heap on the floor. Jade pushed away from where I sat, frozen, and ran to the girl’s side. “She’s breathing. I think she’s okay.”

“Do you still have that rope?” I stood and dusted myself off.
